Our websites are the ‘Australia wide Corporate Office’ of all our online marketing or offline stores.
It’s the first thing people today are looking for when they search for our business.
It just so happens that our business is building websites also.
So our websites should ideally reflect exactly what we offer – simple, no fuss doorways for clients to connect and ultimately buy from our business.
So our customers and clients – like you right now – look for and find us through a website, online.
Between 70% and 80% of all consumers say that they research businesses online before buying products offline.
It’s 100% for Online ordering in ecommerce.
In addition, 38% say that they’ll navigate away from a website if it is poorly designed or takes too long to load.
Especially on mobile!
It’s not a good idea to throw together a small business website that doesn’t help you generate new leads for your business.
Your site doesn’t need to be overly pretty or feature the latest animations – but it does need to gently lead the visitor toward making contact, placing an order, or at least making an enquiry.
Your design must be user-friendly and problem / solution focused.
Choose the Right Domain Name.
It’s always surprising how many small businesses choose confusing or difficult-to-remember domain names. Don’t be clever or artful or think it’s cheeky but cute. It isn’t.
Look at this domain – websitewebdesign.com.au – I have used the two main keywords I am targeting – website and webdesign – and combined them into a domain.
So there’s zero chance of being confused or misinterpreting the intent of this website.
Your domain name must be:
Descriptive of your business
Easy to type and spell (skip the dashes and weird abbreviations)
Easy to remember
Googol became Google.
The Facebook became Facebook.
Combining words is a great technique.
Take Website and Entrepreneur.
Combine and you get Webpreneur? Maybe?
In addition to the name itself, you should also focus on finding a domain name that’s got one of the most popular extensions.
.com (by far the most popular)
Less popular options, such as .info, .club, .life, or .co, can confuse potential leads. But I am still a big fan of them – if it makes sense and is immediately recongissable.
Another suggestion is to leave out dashes and other punctuation in your domain name.
Try to keep it short. One word is ideal for Branding.
International Business Machines became… IBM
However, a lot of shorter domain names aren’t available.
You’re better off choosing a .com name with a longer root than a shorter name with a less-common extension.
Design a Killer Home Page (i.e. Landing Page)
In many cases, the first thing a visitor to your site sees is your home page.
That means it must be clear, attractive, mobile responsive, and easy to read and navigate.
How to start?
We recommend a Landing Page or Lead Magnet funnel.
You should have a concise and compelling headline that…
- Grabs attention
- Identifies a problem
- Provides a solution
And a direct flow to message on Facebook.
We’re moving away from capturing emails, even though they are still very powerful for marketing purposes. You’ll also need an original, meaningful image (or better yet… a video) that talks about a solution if they get your lead magnet.
I’ll talk more about Calls To Action (CTA) later.
Your home page absolutely needs an irresistible offer and a clear CTA.
The CTA should appear above the fold (the first panel your visitors see) for the best conversions (i.e. prospect takes your offer) Offer a free consult, a free download, a short video explaining your poiuint of difference…

boost your seo?
If it’s been a while since you’ve researched keywords and optimized your page, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.
Google changes its search algorithm constantly.
There are a lot of business sites that haven’t even taken mobile optimization seriously.
This is fatal and inexcusable considering that more than 65% of all searches are done on mobile devices.
That percentage is GOING up every year.
Your Website is a Lead-Generating Machine
Mobile voice search means choosing long-tail keywords that are highly focused and specific.
Make sure that the content on your website answers the most commonly asked questions about problems your business and products solve.
Whenever possible, you should also use Schema markup to ensure that it’s easy for Google, Bing, and other search engines to scan and index your site.
Tell Visitors What to Do Next
A lot of small business websites have only one call to action.
It’s should be on the home page, but typically it’s hidden deep in the website’s structure.
(Many small business Web designers are good at graphic design… but miss the mark when it comes to selling things)
No call to action?
It may be out of sight at the bottom of the page, overly complicated, or unclear.
If that’s the case with your site, it’s time to ramp up your calls to action to make them obvious, easy to find, and simple to fill out.
Here’s what I recommend…
- Include a call to action on every page
- Make sure your forms have the fewest possible number of fields, like name and email
- Auto-complete fields whenever possible – that is a script on your page
- Tailor the CTA to the problem / solution
- Use strong verbs and wording that makes it clear what the user will get when they fill out your form
- Your Call To Action should be the only way for people to get in touch with you… initially.

Website Design is not rocket science!
The point is…
You want it to be easy for people to contact you.
multiple landing pages
Another common mistake that local business owners make on their websites is not thinking of every page as a landing page. Every page is a landing page – simple!
Including a CTA on each page is only part of the process.
Each landing page should be specific to a common search query (i.e. problem you solve in your niche).
Because it can be confusing if you try to pack too much information on a single page.
Creating a great user experience on your small business website is a direct lead-generating strategy.
It’s something that will help to keep visitors on your site long enough to respond to your offers.
Creating the right user experience includes:
- Using lots of white space to make your content easy to read
- Breaking up text with images
- Using short, easy-to-read sentences
- Structure… Problem, Solution, Take action
- When users get value on your site, they’ll buy your offers.
If it’s difficult to find what they want, you’ll lose them.
Fast & responsive
One of the best ways to generate leads is by creating content that solves problems and makes people want to buy your solutions.
You can do that by choosing meaningful topics that allow you to demonstrate your expertise and talk about the solutions you provide.
Come up with topics by asking…
- What problems does my business solve?
- Why do people need help with X problem?
- What’s different about my business?
- What surprising benefits come with taking my offer?
Providing answers to these questions will ensure that you’re giving your readers the kind of value they crave.
You can expand the reach of your business by repurposing Videos and Podcasts as…
– Blog posts
– Social media posts
– Paid Ads
There’s no reason your website can’t be generating leads and sales every hour of every day.
